The name "One Big Beautiful Bill" is, frankly, a cruel misnomer. For us, it feels like an act of betrayal. We need to look at what this legislation actually means for our lives and our path forward.


💔 The Harmful Provisions of the "One Big Beautiful Bill"


The OBBBA is a complex piece of legislation that uses massive cuts to social safety net programs to fund tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations, while simultaneously increasing funding for enforcement programs. The provisions below hit our most vulnerable populations the hardest.


1. Massive Cuts to Medicaid & Health Care Access


The bill includes over $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid over the next decade. For our communities, this is a crisis:


  • For the Disabled Community: Medicaid is the primary funding source for essential services like Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS), which allow individuals to live in their homes instead of institutions. While the cuts aren't directly to HCBS, they squeeze state budgets so severely that these non-mandatory, life-sustaining services are the first to be jeopardized. Furthermore, increased frequency of eligibility redetermination (now every six months in some cases) puts an undue administrative burden on individuals with disabilities and their caregivers, leading to eligible people losing coverage due to paperwork errors or missed deadlines.

  • For the LGBTQIA+ Community: Medicaid is crucial, especially for those in poverty. Cuts to funding for clinics like Planned Parenthood (a vital provider of inclusive reproductive and primary care) and a general reduction in access to healthcare will disproportionately harm transgender individuals, people living with HIV, and those seeking mental health services.

  • For the BIPoC Community: These cuts will lead to higher uninsured rates and worse health outcomes for Black and other communities of color, who already face systemic health disparities. Rural hospitals, which serve a high proportion of disabled and BIPoC individuals, are at extreme risk of closure.


2. Increased Work Requirements & Administrative Barriers


The OBBBA imposes new or stricter work or community service requirements (up to 80 hours per month) for many adults without children or disabilities to maintain Medicaid eligibility.


  • The Disproportionate Impact: Though those with a documented disability are exempt, this provision disproportionately harms caregivers (often older women and BIPoC individuals) and people with chronic illnesses or complex mental health conditions (like my cPTSD or severe anxiety/depression) who may not qualify for full disability exemption but are not truly "able-bodied."

  • SNAP Cuts: Coupled with nearly $200 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), stricter work requirements on adults up to age 65 (even if exempt for disability) and new state cost-sharing rules will make it even harder for our communities to maintain basic food security and financial stability.


3. Expanded Immigration Enforcement


The bill authorizes an increase in funding for immigration enforcement and detention, and it restricts federal programs like the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for lawfully present immigrants.


  • A Threat to BIPoC and Immigrant Families: This provision actively works to make life more dangerous and less stable for immigrants and BIPoC communities. It creates significant financial barriers (high application fees) for filing basic applications like asylum, undermining the ability of vulnerable people to find safety and stability in the U.S.


📢 Why This Matters to Everyone—and Why the Urgency


This legislation is an attack on the very concept of a shared safety net. The deep cuts to health care, nutrition, and housing assistance will create a domino effect of instability across society. When the most vulnerable among us—people who, like some of us at The Asylum Project, live with disabilities, chronic illness, and trauma—are stripped of their essential supports, the entire community suffers.


This bill isn't about saving money; it's about shifting resources from working, poor, and marginalized people to the already wealthy. It is designed to make survival within the U.S. increasingly precarious for those who do not fit a narrow, privileged norm.


We understand the fear, the anger, and the crushing weight of burnout. We live it every day. But that drive to succeed, that need to prove ourselves—we can harness that into action and planning.

While challenges exist, Portugal has social security benefits for people with disabilities, including the Prestação Social para a Inclusão (PSI), which provides a minimum income supplement and can aid in community integration.


⚖️ Dignity in Legal Protections


Portugal provides a high degree of legal safety for our communities that is currently eroding in the U.S.


  • LGBTQIA+ Rights: Portugal has strong, national legal protections for the LGBTQIA+ community and is a world leader in transgender rights, with an emphasis on self-determination. You are not moving to a place where you will be fighting a new wave of anti-equality legislation the minute you arrive.

  • Systemic Focus: The societal conversation focuses on inclusion and maintenance of social welfare, rather than the systematic dismantling we see codified in the OBBBA.
