Department: Community Engagement
Reports To: Server Admin, Social Media Manager, & Executive Team
Location: Remote / Discord-based
Time Commitment: 1–5 hours per week (flexible)



Overview

As a Discord Moderator for The Asylum Project, you’ll help foster a safe, inclusive, and welcoming digital community for individuals committed to human rights, liberation, and collective care. Moderators serve as frontline community stewards, upholding our values, preventing harm, and making space for meaningful connection.

This is a volunteer role, open to all—even if you’re not a digital subscriber. If you believe in our mission and want to help create a sanctuary online, we want to hear from you.



Key Responsibilities
• Monitor assigned channels for safety, respect, and alignment with community guidelines
• De-escalate conflict using trauma-informed and identity-affirming practices
• Welcome new members and answer basic questions about the server’s layout and mission
• Flag and report concerns to the Server Admin or Executive Team as needed
• Participate in occasional mod check-ins or trainings (as scheduled)
• Collaborate with fellow moderators to ensure consistent and compassionate enforcement



Ideal Qualities
• Alignment with The Asylum Project’s mission and values
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Calm, thoughtful approach to online conflict
• Understanding of marginalized identities and systems of oppression
• Familiarity with Discord moderation tools (or willingness to learn)



Support & Training

All moderators will receive:
• An onboarding orientation and access to internal mod resources
• Ongoing support from the Server Admin and Executive Team
• Optional community care chats and burnout prevention tools
• The opportunity to grow within the community and be recognized for service
